The Magical World of Water
An Interview with Dr. Masaru Emoto
by Daphne Carpenter
If there is magic on the planet, it is in the water. – Loren Eiseley
From the moment of conception, the unique organism that is to become a human being exists in a cellular membrane of water. In this state, cells begin to sub-divide, and throughout the embryonic and fetal stages of development, we live in a peaceful, watery world: the womb.
We are composed of 90 percent water at birth, and throughout our lives, the human body relies on water as its life force. It hydrates us and keeps us alive. Water is used to baptize and to rebirth a person. As steam, it draws toxins from the body.
However, in the race to become bigger and better, our species has destroyed the water that sustains us. Society has capitalized on it as a commodity to be bought and sold. Meanwhile, so many people on the planet die senselessly without access to adequate drinking water—a fundamental human right.
In some places, water is regarded as a sentient being, revered as an aspect of divinity. It is prayed to and worshipped by some people. Imagine how beautiful and pure the Earth’s eco-systems were when ancient civilizations held reverence for water as a sacred, integral element of their lives. Just think of any tropical paradise, blue lagoon, crystal stream or underground cenote. What feelings arise?
In the story of creation, water plays an essential role. The Koran states, “From water we have made all things.” According to Greek mythology, in the beginning, there was Hydros (Water), the first being to emerge at Creation, and a primordial mud which solidified into Gaia (Earth). The symbiotic relationship between water and earth is clear—water covers 72 percent of the Earth and provides an energetic shield to those who live near it. As a transporter of energy, water has the ability to heal or to make us sick. Perhaps nothing is so essential to life.
Most people who have lived near a large body of water can attest to the sensation of feeling “landlocked” when away from it for too long—a dependence on water that is not only physical, but psychological. Human characteristics have often been associated with the element of water. It is said that people with water personalities tend to be emotional, deep, nurturing, sympathetic, empathetic, imaginative and intuitive.
We realize just how precious this natural resource is as it becomes more and more scarce on our planet. As we continue to exploit water, are we failing to hear a message, a divine transmission of information? Is water communicating to us?
According to Dr. Masaru Emoto, author of The Hidden Messages in Water and The True Power of Water, “Water is the mirror of the soul.” Dr. Emoto feels that water has many faces and that it aligns itself with the consciousness of human beings.
In his research, he has photographed frozen water crystals, concluding that water changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed towards it. He believes that the receptive nature of water reveals how human consciousness can heal polluted, “sick water.”
As a doctor of alternative medicine, researcher and author, Dr. Emoto says that we should not only respect water, but openly acknowledge that we do so by telling it that we respect it. By respecting and caring for the water, it will take care of us as well.
Dr. Emoto theorizes that since blood is mostly water, the water in our blood has the power to create either a healthy or diseased internal environment. This is a phenomenon where science meets consciousness—where self-deprecating thoughts can translate into disease or positive thoughts can heal the body.
My own conscious relationship with water began the summer after second grade, when my family went on vacation to Québec. We checked in to the Uncle Sam Motel and immediately after, my brother and I threw on our swimsuits and ran screaming like banshees out of the hotel room to the swimming pool. But soon after, an unexpected rain began to pour down. My brother went back to the hotel room, abandoning me to swim alone. Realizing that the swim must go on, I stayed behind at the pool.
The clouds drifted in and the rain came down harder. I climbed up onto the worn-out blue diving board and suddenly became aware of myself. In my green-and-white-striped bikini, I stood out there all alone, contemplating my next dive. People were staring at me through their hotel windows, wondering why such a little girl was alone by the pool in the rain—but I didn’t care.
I found myself entranced by the juxtaposition of dark clouds above me, rain all around me, and pool water below me. Suspended in this liquidy bliss (sticking my tongue out to drink the raindrops), I had my first spiritual encounter with water. I realized then that water is mystical in nature.
Fast forward a quarter century. In a recent interview with Vision Magazine, Dr. Emoto shared his thoughts about the communicative nature of water, and how we can improve our lives by simply changing our thoughts.
Vision Magazine: At what point in your life did you realize that water is mystical and that there are hidden messages in water?
Dr. Masaru Emoto: In the early 90s, I came up with the idea to take water crystal photos and I succeeded using high-speed photography. I discovered that crystals formed in frozen water revealed changes when specific concentrated thoughts were directed
toward them. I found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words showed brilliant complexity and colorful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water or water exposed to negative thoughts formed incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors. The implications of this research created a new awareness of how we can positively impact the Earth and our personal health. I have found this experience to be quite mysterious, yet inspiring.
VM: I’ve read that you believe that water crystals are spirits—souls that haven’t attained enlightenment and remain on Earth in the form of water. Could you talk about the spirituality of water?
ME: I believe that as humans we are water beings inhabited by Spirit. We were born 90 percent water and when we leave this world we become water again. When water becomes zero mass (meaning the transparency of light) we advance to the next dimension. Therefore light, Spirit and water are essentially the same divine intelligence.
VM: Do you believe that water has a universal intelligence that reflects human consciousness?
ME: Yes. Because I believe water is the messenger of God, a conduit of Spirit.
VM: The photographs from your books indicate that water is highly responsive to our thoughts and emotions. Could we improve the quality of our lives by praying and sending healing energy to water before we drink it?
ME: Yes, you can improve the quality of your life by sending healing energy to water if you can believe that we are all children of God. To pray to water means to pray to God, because water is an expression of God.
VM: In India, the River Ganges is worshiped and prayed to daily by countless people. Have you photographed water from the River Ganges? Do you know anything about its crystal structure?
ME: We took water crystal photos from the River Ganges. The quality of the water was not so good physically, yet we could obtain a beautiful shaped water crystal. I think we captured the vibration of the prayers offered from people around the river. I also believe if the photographer is Hindu and knows a lot of things about the holiness of the River Ganges, then even more beautiful water crystals could have been obtained. This is due to the power of the observer’s vibration.
VM: Is water able to hear, sense, or see? Do thoughts, words and images have a certain vibration that gets transmitted into water?
ME: All the information is transmitted in the form of vibration. Water can receive the vibration, memorize it and transmit it. All vibrations can be received and reflected by water.
VM: Which words do water crystals seem to respond to most favorably?
ME: Love and gratitude.
VM: Your studies show that water changes its expression when exposed to different words and intentions—proof that thoughts and feelings express physical reality. Is the water in our bodies affected in the same way?
ME: I think so. I know a researcher of blood in California who compared the state of human blood when the person is stressed as opposed to when the person is happy. He concluded that the state of blood could be changed depending on the person’s emotional state. If you understand that blood is basically water, then you can see how this common principal applies.
VM: The water crystals seem to mirror their environment, according to the photographs. Is water itself conscious?
ME: Technically, water is just a medium and it should not have consciousness. But water seems to be receptive to harmonized vibrations and unreceptive to dissonant vibrations. So in this sense, we could say that water is conscious to all vibration. It has the capacity to receive and reflect, inheriting a divine intelligence.
VM: You’ve said that water expresses itself in a vast variety of ways. Could you explain your thoughts on this?
ME: Water expresses itself in a number of ways: As healing hydration in the form of clean drinking water, as food for life in the form of a rain shower, it reflects human aggression in the form of a hurricane or tsunami, and in the same way reflects kindness and compassion in the form of a beautiful, gentle snowfall, or a passive calm stream.
VM: At the recent Live H2O Concert for the Living Water Festival, you shared with us that water likes music and that we should sing a song to it. In your studies, what kind of music is water most receptive to? If we would expose water to music that it likes, could we expect to yield a higher quality garden, for example?
ME: Yes, we can expect that. In fact there are a lot of different reports which were submitted to us from different people across the world about how music can improve the quality of matter. For example, in Europe, there is a winemaker who plays music to wine to improve its quality. About what kind of music water likes, it seems to like classical music, which has comprehensive resonance of vibrations that is good for water. But I also think there may be a case regarding plants, that each plant, like people, has its own favorite music.
VM: What can we do to raise the vibration of water? How does sunlight affect water’s vibration?
ME: We can raise the vibration of water by resonating the vibrations of love and gratitude. It is also better to add the feelings of apology and forgiveness. In reference to sunlight, I believe the relationship between water and sunlight is like a partnership. There is a unique resonance that they share. And so one affects the other.
VM: You’ve concluded in your work that ice crystals “contain the key to the universe.” What is this message?
ME: I will not share this with you yet as the answer is the subject of my new book, Messages from Water and Space which has just been published in Japan and will be published in the United States in the near future.
