California has been a leader in cutting edge health and wellness technologies for decades. There are so many caring and respected healthcare professionals throughout the state who have combined the best of east and west modalities. One great example is HealthWalk, a unique blend of passionate practitioners who work together to create health and wellbeing for all who walk through their doors. Recently I had the opportunity to visit them at their center in Carlsbad, CA. I was very touched by the story of founder Mark Hines, who had been confronted with a serious disabling condition. After little success with western allopathic medicine, he changed his life by traveling the world to find healing systems that create wellness and vibrant health. The result was HealthWalk, whose caring practitioners deliver a new way of healing through cutting edge technologies.
I had a brief talk with Anna Walden, ND, who heads the Vital Hematology department. In her practice, Dr. Walden utilizes a microscope of which there are only 10 in the U.S., mostly because of its considerable expense and uniqueness in performing a dark field live blood analysis.
I then had the opportunity to have a session with Dennis Maness, Ph.D., head of the HealthWalk MindSoul™ Division who practices brain hemispheric integration. Dr. Maness blew my mind even though we only spent about a half hour in an abbreviated version of his normal session. He did a reading of my left and right brain and showed me my hemispheric state at that time, which was unbalanced. I was amazed to see my own brain activity on a screen. Dr. Maness found a CD containing ambient music that united my right and left brain; it’s incredible that something as simple as his exclusively developed CD could soothe my overactive mind. He has also had great success with stroke patients, children with autism, and people with many other conditions.
His work facilitates healthy brain activity through clinically proven technology, resulting in the elusive yet ideal brainwave patterns, or the Esdaile State, which can then support you as you achieve your very best physical, mental, emotional or spiritual levels.
I also had the pleasure to speak with Marilyn Tam, co-visioneer of HealthWalk.
VM: Our theme this month is modern medicine and healing and I think your center is a perfect example of this. Can you talk a bit about the work you do?
Marilyn Tam: We take all the traditional ways of dealing with health from every culture which has learned what works for them through the centuries. I have this saying and people laugh when I say it: if your only instrument is a hammer, everything in the world looks like a nail. And so whether it is acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine, or western medicine, there is a certain filter we see through when we’re looking at the body. At HealthWalk, we utilize the wisdom of all of these different areas and integrate them into clinically proven methods. We use scientific methods and leading edge technology to remove most of what we would call the human error factor.
Our bodies are unique as to how they manifest any kind of dis-ease—and that’s really what we’re talking about: the dis-ease in the body. So you have this particular symptom. Instead of dealing with the symptom, let’s see why the symptom is being manifested. Is it because there is some deeper issue here? And usually there is. Let’s deal with that issue and the only entity that knows best is your body. So what we do here is we say to each client, “Let’s find ways of looking at your body and have your body speak as to what really is the issue. Is it physical? Is it neural or hormonal, adrenal or chemical? Is it parasitical or some kind of microorganism? Is it emotional, spiritual or environmental? Sometimes it is several of these—and then we ask which one is the primary cause.
Let’s say you have six issues (and some people may have more than that)—but which is the most severe trigger? Deal with that one first and then go through the healing process.
In conventional medicine—particularly western medicine—they say, oh, you have a headache? Take two aspirins to reduce the pain and inflammation—but that’s the temporary solution. Why do you have a headache? They don’t ask that. Maybe your headache is caused by a digestive issue, which is triggering some kind of imbalance in your system that is then causing the headache. You [may] absorb something and it sets off some kind of allergic reaction in your body which then creates a headache. Conventional western medicine never goes there. So what we do here is combine leading edge technologies, such as galvanic skin response with the most sophisticated microscope in the world. Dr. Maness is working with MindSoul Brain Technologies, Harmonic Alliance Therapy, and we have digital infrared thermal imaging. We also look at the body and nutrition from a functional perspective.
So if we have the analysis, then we have the protocol to move forward. We take all different perspectives and combine them, because until this point in history, the technology wasn’t available.
VM: How long has HealthWalk been around?
MT: We started in 2006. It’s been an accumulation of technologies and the stars finally aligned. I feel the [general] population is ready because of all the health issues that have been caused by our environment, food supply, and lifestyles. It’s come to the point where we recognize that we can’t keep going this way. We [the U.S.] have the most expensive healthcare. We spend the highest percentage of our income on healthcare, [yet] we are number 17 in the world in terms of [quality of] healthcare. There is something wrong with this picture. It’s because we’re not dealing with health. We’re dealing with symptom abatement. And a lot of what we spend is on the last 30 days or the last year of a person’s life, so the quality of life is not actually any better. It’s worse—we’re just living longer in agony and that’s sad because this is not the way we envision living longer. We want to live longer—vibrantly. We want a quality of life where we are able to go out and do things. We don’t want to live longer [just to] sit in wheelchairs [in a] nursing home with tubes coming down. It’s almost like we are perpetuating a society of old, feeble, frail people who are living miserable lives. What for? It’s painful to even think about.
VM: But I believe this is shifting and places like HealthWalk are contributing to a new way of thinking.
MT: I give credit to the baby boomer generation. First of all, 30 is now no longer 30; it’s actually 20. Fifty is 40—we’ve moved everything back at least a decade. We say that we’re not willing to sit in a wheelchair and just call that life. We’re waking up to the fact that there are alternatives. What can we do to improve our health by living more consciously? Do we choose what we consume differently? Do we allocate our resources differently [and consider] how we live in our environment? We’re now recognizing there is a relationship between what we do and the [health of the] environment.
Disease is rampant. Heart disease is the biggest killer [in the U.S.]. One hundred years ago, there were four cases of an unusual disease and they didn’t know what it was. And here [heart disease is] the biggest killer of Americans. So in 100 years, [it went] from a disease that was not in existence to being the biggest killer. There is something wrong here. We have to ask: what have we done to create this? What did we do to our environment, what did we do to our food, and what did we do with our lifestyle?
These are preventable and changeable things and that’s what we do at HealthWalk. We give you the information to show you what’s going on in your body and based on this, how can we empower you with information and solutions so that you can live more vibrantly?
VM: Can you give an example of a success story that has touched your heart?
MT: Our salesman’s wife had stage four ovarian cancer. She was basically given a 50/50 [chance of survival]. They said that the last thing they could do was give her IPT [Insulin Potentiation Therapy]. What they do is lower your blood sugar so that you’re almost in diabetic shock and then they put the chemotherapy in insulin and shoot it into your body. Then it goes directly to your cells [so that] you can use a lower level chemotherapy. She asked the doctor, “What are the chances if I don’t do this?” They told her it was a 50/50 chance—and if she does the therapy, [it’s also] a 50/50 chance. Well they had no [alternative] so they did [the IPT]. She went for several sessions, but it wasn’t doing any good, so she stopped and was just waiting to die.
Somehow, she heard about us and came in—now she’s running marathons again. And that’s how we got our salesman. He said, “I believe in what you do. You saved my wife’s life; let me be your salesman.”
Another story was a young man from Toronto who was in a car accident when he was five years old. Now he’s 19 and for the last 14 years, his hip has been locked in a position and his arm has been held rigid and askew. He heard about us and his family and community chipped [in] to send him here. As we worked with him, we were all crying because we saw the beginning of a transformation. He and his dad were sitting together in the lobby today between appointments. He was massaging his father’s shoulder and his father said, “This is the first time he’s ever done this in his life.”
I felt so bad when he first came because his brain was there but he couldn’t articulate his words because of all the damage; he could only make grunting sounds. Now he can ask me a question and I can respond. Is it perfect? No, but it is an improvement from where he was. Having the ability to help him is such a blessing.
VM: What is your role here? Do you coordinate the therapies?
MT: My partner, Mark, and I are what we call co-visioneers. Mark is the person who leads the technology because of his knowledge and his passion [in that field]. He has done so much research in leading edge technologies.
For me, my role is more holding the light and the intention of where we are going, understanding the strategy and how to move the company forward. I look at how to approach the market, how to approach our clients, and how to coordinate a system. So we’re perfect mirrors for each other. Mark has the technical understanding and I have the piece of the puzzle that’s used to interface with the world.
One thing we share is a passion for the work and for making a difference. When your mind and body are healthy, then your spirit is actually aligned. This makes the world a better place because we do not operate from fear anymore; we operate from understanding, sharing and compassion in creating a positive future for everyone.
