One: The Movie

by Sydney L. Murray

The beauty of One: The Movie is that three friends from Detroit who had no filmmaking experience decided to make a film. I think their innocence in this endeavor allowed for a bit of magic to shine through as they ventured out, armed with questions about the meaning of life. Initially, they wanted to do a meet-on-the-street type interview and then decided to expand it and speak to experts in the fields of mind, spirituality and religion.

Its brilliance comes from the humility of the filmmakers in their desire to look at what it is like to be human. The absolute beauty of the honesty in some of the answers from all interviewed was starkly haunting in its authenticity.

Also by way of the sheer number of people interviewed, I felt as if I were watching a kaleidoscope of humanity and all of its complexity.

Rather than identify every teacher, you are able to just be with each teacher’s thoughts and words as opposed to valuing their celebrity. (You do find out most of the bigger names at the end.)

This movie was powerful because it moved from a place of questioning to a place of knowing.

Filmmaker Ward M. Powers had one goal on this project: to have no fear or attachment to the outcome. Along with his wife Diane, friend Scott Carter, and cousin Chad Munce, they set out to illuminate some of the most important elements of being human in the 21st century.

They traveled all over the world asking some of “life’s ultimate questions,” interviewing learned individuals from all major religions, spiritual traditions, and nondenominational organizations, as well as some absolute characters from their street interviews.

There is one musical section of the film, featuring the soundtrack of the sublime cellist Michael Fitzpatrick, who composed a work entitled Compassion for the Dalai Lama. At times I was lifted as much by the music as by the words of wisdom offered by so many disparate people, ranging from an African king, to a Buddhist nun, to a homeless man. I was reminded we are more alike than we are different.

The power of this film is the journey of life reflected in so many faces, known and unknown, the journey of you and I–we are all one.

One: The Movie is now available from the Spiritual Cinema Circle during the month of July. The Spiritual Cinema Circle offers hard-to-find films that inspire and uplift humanity. www.spiritualcinemacircle.com
