Healing Ourselves through Energy Medicine
A Conversation with Donna Eden
by Nicole Pugh
Donna Eden has been a healer and pioneer in the field of energy medicine for the last thirty years. She defines energy medicine as “a new approach to healthcare that is based on ancient healing traditions.” Energy medicine uses physical maneuvers to move the energy in our body in ways that allow this energy to flow more freely—and thus promote health. Eden is the author of the best-selling book Energy Medicine and will be offering a seminar entitled Come Alive: The Healing Tools of Energy Medicine in Pasadena, March 27th and 28th.
Vision Magazine: Can anyone work with the subtle energies of their bodies, even if they cannot see or otherwise experience them first hand?
Donna Eden: Absolutely! Simple stretch-and-breathe exercises, for instance, make room for energies to flow more freely in the body. More precise interventions to increase the flow of energy to the kidney or heart, are also basic procedures in energy medicine. Over the past thirty years, I’ve been developing simple techniques that allow people who don’t see or otherwise sense energies to work with them effectively.
VM: How can a person new to this way of thinking cultivate this awareness?
DE: To begin with, it helps to understand how energy fields are the infrastructure of the physical body. Within the embryo is an electrical field that resembles the adult that the embryo is going to become. It is as if the physical body configures itself around this energy field. Every physical condition is, in fact, also patterned around the body’s energy fields. Energy medicine corrects physical problems by bringing better balance and harmony to these energy fields.
VM: You (and your husband/colleague David Feinstein, PhD) speak of the Nine Primary Energy Systems. How are these systems interrelated?
DE: Some of these systems, such as the aura, meridians, chakras, and five elements, have become part of our language. [Others] are not generally familiar, such as the basic grid, radiant circuits, and Celtic weave. Given the complexity of the physical body, it is not surprising that the energy system that is its infrastructure would also be complex. All nine of these systems have been identified and worked with by one traditional healing system or another. There are actually more than nine energy systems, but by understanding how to work with these, you can develop a comprehensive approach to keeping the body’s energies healthy.
All nine systems interrelate. Focusing on the system most needing attention can significantly enhance the healing process and shorten it. I teach my students to identify what system is most in need of attention, but you can’t go wrong if you begin with the meridians or with the chakras, as they are so central and powerful.
VM: Can you share a little bit about the five-minute routine you will be teaching at the seminar?
DE: When we were writing my book, Energy Medicine, we wanted to give people a very practical, brief set of procedures that would help establish and maintain positive energy patterns. So we chose some of the most powerful methods that help just about everyone. From those, we selected a set that tends to impact all of the body’s energy systems. By keeping it to five minutes, more people [are likely to] use it on a daily basis. But make no mistake—brief as it is, it is still potent.
VM: Our March theme is War and Peace. How can the use of energy medicine help us to create peace within our own bodies, instead of waging war within them?
DE: Because of the many conflicts in our lives and in our world, our energies become conflicted as well. This is not just at a psychological level. It is [also] at a physical level. It makes it much harder to thrive when these conflicts in our physical energies become established. By developing harmony among your body’s energy systems, you gain greater access to your physical resources.
We often say during our classes that we have the privilege of helping raise the vibration of the planet by teaching people how to raise the vibration of their own bodies—one person, one group, at a time. When your energies are in a good flow, you feel better and you are a more peaceful and creative person. It is that simple.
