Body Skirmishes Find Peace at DK Hair

by Sydney L. Murray

Facial Massage DK HairIt was a busy deadline week and that is exactly why I chose to schedule a facial and massage at DK Hair. Our theme this month is war and peace and I find myself experiencing the split between wanting to look good and wanting my pampering experience to be natural and effortless. In all things you get what you give. Thank goodness DK Hair in Hillcrest is walking distance from our Vision Magazine offices.
I gave myself permission to experience a rejuvenating facial and a relaxing massage and I had the good fortune of having them with two people who excel in their fields. First there is esthetician Brenda Allick and then masseur William Brisson. DK Hair understands that there is more to beauty than just great hair. That is why they have expanded their salon to include the elements of a day spa. Keeping true to their core business practice, they have hired extremely talented people.

Okay, back to this skirmish with my looks. I can’t really call it a war. I want to look good and so I eat well and work out. But it’s these so-called non-essential items like a massage or a facial that I bargain with myself to include in my schedule. I think, “I really don’t have time for that.”

But let me tell you, the payoff is big if you make the time. Consider having an amazing facial followed by a relaxing, yet spiritually moving, massage—all found in an urban upbeat salon. Allick is well schooled in some of the most cutting edge skin technologies available today. Using True products, she offered me a relaxing and aromatic facial called reveal anti-aging that utilizes lactic acid, which our body already produces, so it is gentle to your skin. This facial can reduce signs of aging, revealing younger looking skin that is brighter and, in my case, much less stressed. I was dehydrated from surfing and wet winter weather, being indoors with heat and maybe a little too much coffee as well.

We discussed my current facial regimen and she offered to enroll me in Brenda’s Brow Bootcamp so that I can experience the Anastasia brow difference. I do have my brows done because I know that it makes a difference in how I look. But I can’t wait to see the results of this technique by Anastasia, who has created brows for many of the well known beauties of our day in her signature salon in Beverly Hills. Allick was trained by the famed Anastasia herself.

Did you know that as long ago as 500 B.C. women were grooming their brows? Roman women removed brow hair with razors and pumice stones and home made depilatory creams which came from medicinal plants such as bryonies. They also favored tweezers, which, of course, are still used today. I agreed to diligently let my brows grow so that I may enter Brenda’s Brow Bootcamp. After this amazing facial, my skin felt soft and supple, yet firm. And I felt as if my skin looked brighter. I loved this facial.

The next day I returned and was introduced to William Brisson, with whom I had an urban professional massage because, after all, I am urban and a professional. His intuitive hands combined deep tissue work on some of my armored body areas followed by some healing work. His small oasis really was a sanctuary for me as the cares and worries of the day floated away almost immediately. With his use of melodic music and quality oils and his overall experienced and intuitive style, I felt as if I had entered a warm cocoon of relaxation.

Whether it was the inviting room, the music or just my simple enjoyment in his strong touch, I was extremely relaxed while getting the massage and found it difficult to answer simple questions. I felt my body letting go. Brisson knew just where to concentrate his technique as my muscles released under the perfect pressure of his massage. Brisson’s healing space seems almost out of place in this urban salon that has a lot of energy and vibrancy. Yet the combination really is irresistible when you can see and feel the recuperative affects of this expert masseur’s massage. All I can think of is “Wow! Does he know bodies!” And sign me up for another one!

Having a facial and massage is restorative and it’s lovely to be able to follow it with hair and make-up if you have an event or just want to look great for that certain someone. Let’s face it—we feel better when we look great. A brow job can take years off of your face, a stylish haircut—ditto. Add a massage that is out of this world and I feel years younger. My body skirmishes have skirted off and are replaced by calm and beauty courtesy of Allick and Brisson of DK Hair.
