Visionary Artist January 2008
Ingrid Sundberg
“We are all connected to everyone and everything in the universe. Therefore,
everything one does as an individual affects the whole. All thoughts, words,
images, prayers, blessings, and deeds are listened
to by all that is.”—Serge
Kahili King
The vibrant watercolors of artist Ingrid Sundberg are an exploration of
the artist’s interest in the connections that weave our human lives to
nature, spirituality, science, and each other. These kind of ideas and
connections are often intellectual in nature; however, Sundberg illustrates
them visually through the use of patterns, symbols, and color. Each piece
begins with a topic or concept, and using research and intuition, she develops
a visual language that communicates those ideas. The resulting “visual
essays” lead the viewer toward a deeper appreciation of the threads that
connect us all.
Ms.
Sundberg grew up in Maine on the small island of Mount Desert. Childhood
treks through the Acadia National Park and the constant presence of both
ocean and forest allowed her imagination to run wild. From a young age,
she had an appreciation and connection with nature, spirituality and art.
Later in life, she attended Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where
she studied illustration under a merit scholarship. Since graduation, Ms.
Sundberg has expanded her artistic repertoire to include whimsical children’s
book illustrations which explore the wonder of imagination. She is inspired
by the potential of all things to be alive and to tell a story; thus, flowers
have eyes and monsters live in every swamp. Imagination will take a child
on adventures through space and turn frogs into princes. Her work wishes
to pay tribute to that imagination which allows children, despite all circumstances,
to dream.
Writing, Ms. Sundberg’s second love, brought her to Southern California where she earned her masters degree in screenwriting from Chapman University. Her artistic talents have been put to work in the film industry. She also runs a freelance illustration business, Sundberg Studio, as well as teaches illustration and drawing at Westwood College. Her work has been published in magazines and books, including Sage Woman, The Mountain Astrologer, New Moon, and Aphrodisia II: Art of the Female Form. Her work has been exhibited at the NoHo Gallery LA and The Foundry Art Center, among others.
